In THE STORIES, we follow Egypt's modern, turbulent history through a lovely melodramatic family chronicle.

Ahmed is a gifted pianist. He lives in a small home with his mother, Fairouz, his father, Ragheb, and his two brothers – his twin brother Hassan and Sharaf. Ahmed sees his musical talent as a possible escape from the cramped apartment. The film is structured around key historical events in Egypt’s modern history. The wars with Israel, the unrest of 1977, and the assassination of the president in 1981 all become turning points that penetrate the small apartment and shape the family’s life.

Director Abu Bakr Shawky – previously behind the audience favourite Yomeddine – delivers a warm and entertaining family portrait.

Opening Film

Before the film, from 18.00, there will be an informal gathering in the basement at Vika to mark the festival's first day. DJ Don Dana will also be playing until the opening film begins at 19.00 in Vika 1.
