The Little Sister
When Fatima leaves her tight-knit suburban family to study philosophy in Paris, she finds herself torn between her religious upbringing and the free student life in the city.
Fatima is 17 and the youngest in a warm French-Algerian family. We follow her as she leaves home and starts university in Paris. She dates, makes new friends, and takes her first careful steps into adulthood. When Fatima discovers her attraction to women, her feelings are challenged by loyalty to her beloved Muslim family. Fatima faces what feels like an impossible dilemma: How can one be true to oneself when different parts of one's identity do not seem to match?
The Little Sister is a subtle but powerful coming-of-age drama. Director Herzi paints her characters with empathy and avoids heightening conflicts for drama. Fatima's story is more about accepting oneself than being accepted by others. In this way, The Little Sister becomes a story about growing up rather than coming out.
