What does the world look like if you grow up in Sabra and Shatila, the impoverished neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital shown in the film IN THE SHADOW OF BEIRUT? How is it to grow up there as a refugee from Palestine or Syria? What are the challenges and dreams of children from Sabra and Shatila?

The Director of International Programmes in Save the Children Norway and author of the book «The Wall – A Divided Landscape in Israel and Palestine,» Nora Ingdal, and Ahmed Alaydi, who grew up as a Palestinian refugee in the neighboring camps of Sabra and Shatila, in conversation with Ewa Sapiezynska, Senior Advisor on Humanitarian Advocacy in Save the Children Norway.

About the film:

An undocumented mother cannot afford to send her sick daughter to a hospital. An eight-year-old Syrian refugee works long days to support his mother and siblings. One father considers if his thirteen-year-old daughter would be better off married, while another is attempting to kick both criminal and drug habits to raise his young son better. These four and their families make up the heart of In the Shadow of Beirut.

  • Nora Ingdal is the author of «The Wall – a Divided Landscape in Israel and Palestine» and the Director of International Programs at Save the Children Norway.
  • Ahmed Alaydi, who grew up as a Palestinian refugee in the Mar Elias and Bourj el-Barajneh refugee camps near Sabra and Shatila in southern Beirut.
