Privacy of Wounds
It seems almost impossible to grasp how it is to have lived in Syria during the last years, and even more difficult to comprehend what it is like to experience some of the country’s most notorious prisons. Dalia Kury attempts to reconstruct three former Syrian prisoners, Hasan, Mazen and Khaldoon’s life in captivity, in Norway. As an experiment they have accepted to be locked inside for three days without sunlight and with only thin mattresses to sleep on, while being under surveillance. Slowly but surely, they begin to tell about their past experiences, characterized by torture and death, and a feeling of being forgotten by the rest of the world.
Kury’s experiment gives a unique insight to horrific violations, but the result is also a documentary filled with humor. The companionship created through these three days in a basement in Oslo is enough to understand the human will to survive and that even in the darkest times there are some glimpses of hope.
Dalia Kury is a palestinian Jordanian who lives in Oslo. She has made several award-winning documentaries about arab identiy and culture. Kury has also directed and produced several documentaries for Al Jazeera.
