Four Daughters

In this Oscar-nominated film, memories, sisterhood, and radicalization in a Tunisian family are explored. Through its creative play with the documentary form, FOUR DAUGHTERS is one of the best films of the year.

In 2016, Tunisian Olfa Hamrouni became internationally known when she spoke about the radicalization of two of her teenage daughters, both of whom left Tunisia to fight for The Islamic State in Libya. Olfa strongly criticized the Tunisian government for failing to prevent her daughters from leaving the country.

Four Daughters retells the story of matriarch Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters. The complex family history unfolds through interviews and dramatizations, and the film seeks to understand why the two oldest daughters were radicalized. Actors in the roles of Olfa, the two oldest daughters, and the family help recreate moments from the family's real life, filled with joy and sorrow.

The film premiered in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received several awards, including the prize for Best Documentary Film.

Director

Kaouther Ben Hania (b. 1977) studied film in Tunisia and Paris at La Fémis and the Sorbonne. Her film Beauty and the Dogs was Tunisia's candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and was screened at Arab Film Days in 2018. She also directed The Man Who Sold His Skin, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and was nominated for an Oscar the following year. Her most recent film, Four Daughters, had its premiere in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
