AFD16 Nawara

Sharp social critique infuses the populist Egyptian cinema stylings of “Nawara,” a velvet-clothed yet biting commentary on how the poor always get screwed.
Variety

Nawara is Egypt’s best kind of melodrama with its sharp criticism of society where the high-class dominates the lower class. Nawara’s life is not simple. She is married, but lives with her grandmother when her own husband cannot afford to buy them a house. She commutes for hours every day to work as a housekeeper at a rich family, where even the dog Butch eats food that Nawara only can dream of. Nawara strives to work it all out with her Nubian husband, which is seen as a low status in society and whose father is at the hospital. Those who are not used to Egyptian drama can find this film a little caricatured, but for those who know the context will be surprised and enjoy the many kicks addressed to the state.
