What does cows have to do with Palestinian nonviolent resistance? The documentary The Wanted 18 tells this highly unusual story by combining stop-motion animation, drawings and interviews. It is placed in the petite, Christian village Beit Sahour on the West Bank, in the period leading up to the first Palestinian intifada almost 30 years ago. In an attempt to establish an independent Palestinian economy, the villagers stopped paying taxes and started to produce milk from their own cows. Israel, who did not take these events lightly, declared the cows “a national security threat” and the animals were hidden. The story about how the eighteen “Christian cows” threatened Israel is one of the best examples of the absurdity about this seemingly everlasting Israeli occupation of Palestine. Screened in collaboration with Oslo Dokumentarkino.

After the screening on Saturday 18 April at. 1:30 p.m. there will be a panel discussion about nonviolent resistance in Palestine with Mazin Qumsiyeh, Palestinian researcher and activist.

What methods do the Palestinian resistance movement have left to use? The film The Wanted 18 shows innovative non-violent actions during the first intifada. Are these mechanisms still effective today, or have they played out their role?
